Cozy Up with Chestnuts: How to Master the Most Nostalgic Christmas Ingredient

Hiii, my cozy crew!

There’s a certain smell that is Christmas to me. It’s not just pine trees and gingerbread… it’s the warm, nutty, slightly sweet aroma of chestnuts roasting. It’s pure nostalgia in a nutshell! But if you’ve never worked with them before, I know they can seem a little… intimidating. Do you roast them? Boil them? How on earth do you peel them?!

Don’t you worry, bestie. I’m breaking it all down for you today. We’re unlocking the magic of chestnuts together and I’m giving you the easiest, most luxurious soup recipe that will absolutely become a new holiday tradition.

Why Chestnuts = Instant Christmas Vibes

Let's be real, chestnuts are the cozy, elegant, old-soul ingredient of the holiday season. They’re not like other nuts—they’re soft, starchy, and slightly sweet, making them perfect for both savory dishes and decadent desserts. They’re in season from September to February, with their peak being right around the holidays. They just feel special.

My #1 Pro Tip 👉 DON’T STRESS! Yes, you can roast and peel them yourself (I’ll show you how below!), but for a major shortcut, you can 100% use pre-cooked, pre-peeled chestnuts. Look for them vacuum-sealed or in a jar at your grocery store. I use them all the time and it’s a total game-changer for getting that gourmet flavor without the fuss. Your secret is safe with me!

Your Foolproof Guide to Roasting & Peeling Fresh Chestnuts

If you’re feeling adventurous and want the full experience (and that incredible smell in your house!), here’s how it’s done:

Score the Shells: This is the most important step! Using a sharp paring knife, carefully score a large cut  on the flat side of each chestnut. This lets the steam escape and prevents them from exploding in your oven (yes, really!).

Roast ‘Em: Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Roast at 425°F (220°C) for 15-20 minutes, until the shells have pulled back and the nut inside is tender and golden.

Peel While Hot: This is key! Wrap the hot chestnuts in a kitchen towel and let them steam for a minute. Then, peel them one by one while they’re still very warm. The inner skin comes off much easier when they’re hot.
